The actively staged reading adapted from an Oscar Wilde short story was the first performance in the Daniel E. Offutt III Theatre, the central jewel in the new Performing Arts Center at Garrett College.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Leembruggen \u2013 a veteran actor and director who won the 2014 Indie Capital Awards for Best Supporting Actor in <em>The Henchman\u2019s War<\/em> \u2013 portrayed the severely offended (and impressively funny) spectral presence. While older family members keep trying to offer helpful advice (such as Tammany Rising Sun Lubricator to oil his rusty chains), the Otis twins are constantly counter-attacking with toy peashooters, tripwires and falling buckets of water.<\/p><p>However \u2013 and here comes the spoiler alert \u2013 all ends well when Virginia eventually teams up with the ghost to help him gain forgiveness for his earthly mistakes and make it to \u201cthe other side.\u201d<\/p><p>Christine Mosere \u2013 ESP\u2019s artistic director who also served as director for Sunday\u2019s performance \u2013 said the cast was honored to be the Offutt Theatre\u2019s opening production, which was sponsored by the Garrett Lakes Arts Festival (GLAF).<\/p><p>\u201cWhen we walked in here, every one of us said, \u2018It\u2019s so beautiful,\u2019 \u201d said Mosere. \u201cAnd they [Sunday\u2019s patrons] were a great audience. You\u2019re never sure how an audience is going to react to an actively staged reading \u2013 it\u2019s not a full-out production \u2013 but the audience was so warm and welcoming.\u201d<\/p><p>\u201cIt\u2019s really the most wonderful place I\u2019ve played in at least 18 years,\u201d said Dan Jacoby, whose multiple roles Sunday included eldest son Washington Otis. \u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful space. I\u2019m thrilled we could help open it.\u201d<\/p><p>Zach Trautwein, who coordinates sound and lighting for the PAC, said the facility \u201cis beautiful and functional\u201d and \u201cwill serve the county well.\u201d<\/p><p>\u201cThe first performance was smooth and everyone seemed to feel at home in the space,\u201d added Trautwein. \u201cFrom a tech perspective, the systems worked wonderfully, leaving just a few minor things to iron out.\u201d<\/p><p>\u201cThe opening of the PAC marks a lifetime of achievements for many people in our community,\u201d said Mary Mateer Cummings, executive director of both GLAF and the PAC. \u201cSunday\u2019s performance was a celebration of the members of our performing arts community \u2013 both today\u2019s and those of the past \u2013 that labored in love to keep the arts alive and thriving in Garrett County.\u201d<\/p><p>GLAF\u2019s next PAC performance will be Ellis Dyson and the Shambles on October 29<sup>th<\/sup>.
