GLAF hosts inaugural event, which draws rave reviews from patrons<\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Patrons praised both the performance and the venue Sunday afternoon after Endangered Species Project\u2019s presentation of the Canterville Ghost<\/em> in the newly opened Performing Arts Center at Garrett College.<\/p>

The $21 million facility hosted several small events \u2013 including the College\u2019s Joan Crawford Lecture Series \u2013 last month in the center\u2019s recital hall, but Sunday\u2019s event was the first to use the Daniel E. Offutt III Theatre. Garrett Lakes Arts Festival (GLAF) \u2013 one of five founding partners supporting the new performing arts center \u2013 was the sponsoring organization for Sunday\u2019s performance.<\/p>

Patrons enthusiastically endorsed the PAC.<\/p>

\u201cWhat a wonderful facility \u2013 tremendous for the future of arts in Garrett County, especially for young people,\u201d said Fred Fox, the incoming chair for GLAF\u2019s Board of Directors. \u201cIn some ways it\u2019s overdue \u2013 but it was well worth the wait.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cThe theatre was just beautiful,\u201d said Oakland resident Kathy Coble. \u201cIt\u2019s a wonderful place for people to come together.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\u201cIt reminded me of the opera house in Venice, Italy,\u201d said Don Coble, Kathy\u2019s husband. \u201cIt had great acoustics and there was just a wonderful enthusiasm throughout the theatre.\u201d<\/p>

Oakland resident Mike Bello made a different comparison.<\/p>

\u201cI love it,\u201d said Bello. \u201cIt reminds me of the Meyerhoff in Baltimore.\u201d<\/p>

Oakland resident Amy Mussen said the theatre\u2019s finishings was both functional and attractive.<\/p>

\u201cThe woodwork is striking,\u201d said Mussen. \u201cI know it\u2019s for the acoustics, but it\u2019s also unusually beautiful.\u201d<\/p>

Mary Mateer Cummings, executive director of both GLAF and the PAC, said the event provided a memorable opening for the facility.<\/p>

\u201cThis is a dream realized,\u201d said Cummings. \u201cA home for GLAF \u2013 and a space to enjoy performances from our very talented Garrett County community as well as performances from outside our community.\u201d<\/p>

Dr. Richard Midcap, Garrett College\u2019s president, praised the partnerships that created and will sustain the PAC.<\/p>

\u201cI\u2019m so grateful to GLAF, Garrett County Public Schools, the Garrett County Arts Council and the Garrett County Commissioners,\u201d said Midcap. \u201cOur partners have made significant, long-term commitments to the PAC that will ensure performances like today\u2019s remain accessible to Garrett County residents. This event is an important milestone for performing arts in Garrett County.\u201d<\/p>

Midcap noted the leadership provided by Kathy Meagher, GC\u2019s director of campus facilities and security, in the design and construction of the new PAC.<\/p>

\u201cKathy did an incredible job making sure the vision that developed for the PAC translated into this incredible facility,\u201d said Midcap, who also recognized DLR Group for its creative architecture and Leonard S. Fiore, Inc., the general contractor for the project.<\/p>

\u201cI\u2019m super-happy with the way everything worked out,\u201d said Meagher, who previously oversaw design and construction of the College\u2019s Offutt STEM Center. \u201cSeeing our community input and the architect\u2019s vision come to fruition \u2013 it\u2019s a wonderful and satisfying experience.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cI really hope the PAC\u2019s users will be happy with the design,\u201d said DLR\u2019s Monika Smith, who attended Sunday\u2019s opening performance. \u201cWe concentrated on creating flexible, accessible space.
